Title : Journey to Rajasthan: Three Weeks Discovering India
Introduction
A few years ago, my family and I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Rajasthan, an incredible region in northern India, with its vibrant colors, majestic palaces, and rich cultural heritage. Our journey began in New Delhi and took us to the bustling streets of Jodhpur, the splendors of Agra, and far beyond. Beyond the landscapes and sights, we immersed ourselves in the diversity of Indian culture, discovering the traditions of different castes and the magnificent blue houses of Jodhpur.
Arrival in New Delhi: First Encounter with India.
From the moment we arrived in New Delhi, we were struck by the city's vibrant energy. Between the tuk-tuks, the markets, and the temples, New Delhi offered us a first glimpse of everyday Indian life, with its contrasts and bustling atmosphere. We explored the Chandni Chowk district, a labyrinth of lively alleyways, perfect for an introduction to local flavors and colors.
The Taj Mahal in Agra: A Breathtaking Marvel.
It's impossible to go to India without seeing the famous Taj Mahal. In Agra, the beauty of this iconic monument, with its white marble and architectural details, was breathtaking. We visited the mausoleum at sunrise, which gave the whole place a golden glow. As lovers of travel and art, this visit was one of the highlights of our trip.
Discovering Caste Systems and Traditions:
This trip also allowed us to better understand Indian traditions, particularly the caste systems that still shape many aspects of society. Through discussions with locals, we discovered how these social structures influence family and professional dynamics. It was an enriching and fascinating experience to learn more about such an ancient and complex culture.
Jodhpur: The Blue City.
Jodhpur, nicknamed the “Blue City,” was an essential stop on our trip. Wandering through its streets, we admired the blue-painted houses, which seemed to shimmer in the Indian sun. This symbolic color is linked to the Brahmins, the highest caste, but today, many houses are painted blue for both aesthetic and practical reasons, as this color helps keep the houses cool.
Discovering the Thar Desert and the Wonders of Rajasthan:
Our Rajasthan adventure wouldn't be complete without immersing ourselves in the Thar Desert, a vast expanse of golden sand. We experienced the magic of a camel ride at sunset, with dunes stretching as far as the eye could see. We also visited a nomadic village with hundreds of camels.
We visited the Jain temple of Ranakpur, an architectural gem hidden in the Aravalli Mountains. This temple is famous for its thousands of intricately carved pillars, each unique, and for the incredible serenity that pervades its walkways. This visit was a striking contrast to the hustle and bustle of the cities.
Jaisalmer Fort, nicknamed the “Golden Fort,” proved equally impressive. This citadel overlooking the city of Jaisalmer is inhabited and teeming with life. With its sand-colored walls blending seamlessly into the desert, the fort transported us to the past, as if time had stood still. Strolling through its narrow alleyways, we admired the sculpted havelis and discovered artisan shops.
Finally, the Nagda Mewar temple, located not far from Udaipur, amazed us with its sculptures and ancient architecture. This isolated site, nestled in a natural setting, allowed us to discover intricate details that testify to the artistic richness of the era.
Each stop in these fascinating places added a new dimension to our trip to Rajasthan, offering a perfect blend of culture, spirituality, and breathtaking landscapes.
A Family Trip Filled with Discoveries:
Traveling as a family to Rajasthan, we were transported to another world, where each city, each landscape, and each encounter immersed us a little deeper in Indian traditions and culture. For those who, like me, follow a gluten-free diet, there are thankfully many local gluten-free options, such as rice, vegetables, and lentils, which are at the heart of Indian cuisine.
Conclusion:
This trip to Rajasthan was an experience rich in emotions and cultural discoveries. Whether admiring the monuments or exploring the diversity of its traditions, Rajasthan offers a complete change of scenery, enriching and broadening our horizons. We hope to return to India one day, particularly to the Kerala region, to discover another facet of India and share new adventures on Gluten Evasion.
