Trip to Greece for a friend's 50th birthday: Discovering Athens and escaping to one of the Ionian islands (Kalamos)
A friend from Singapore, now living in Athens, organized his 50th birthday celebration in Greece, bringing together about fifty friends. It was the perfect opportunity to visit a destination that combines history, breathtaking scenery, and fabulous local cuisine. Between exploring Athens and a relaxing stay with friends in Mitikas, opposite Kalamos, this trip was a complete success. Here's a little glimpse into our adventure.
Athens: Immersion in Ancient History
The Acropolis and the Plaka District
It's impossible to begin a visit to Athens without stopping at the Acropolis . We took the time to climb to the top to admire the Parthenon , one of the most famous monuments in the world. The history of this legendary place and the panoramic views of the city were breathtaking.
On our way back down, we strolled through the Plaka district , a charming area with its cobbled streets, small shops, and tavernas. There, we enjoyed naturally gluten-free Greek dishes, such as Greek salad, grilled vegetables, and herb-roasted chicken.
Temple of Zeus and Mount Lycabettus
The next day, we began our day with a visit to the Temple of Zeus , another archaeological marvel of Athens. The sheer scale of this ancient structure is fascinating. Afterward, we took the time to climb Mount Lycabettus , one of the highest points in Athens. After a short ascent, we were rewarded with a breathtaking view of the entire city, with the Acropolis as a backdrop. This spot is perfect for a contemplative break, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Chapel of St. George at the summit added a touch of charm to this panorama.
After this climb, we explored the lively Monastiraki with its market, perfect for finding souvenirs.
After those two intense days in Athens, under 40 degrees, we were ready for a calmer break and took the road to Mitikas , a small village located opposite the island of Kalamos.
Four Days of Relaxation in Mitikas: Between Sea and Nature
After the dynamism of Athens, Mitikas offered us an ideal setting to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Ionian Islands . This charming village, located on the coast opposite the island of Kalamos , is a true haven of peace.
Installation and Stroll by the Sea
On the way, we stopped to admire the Corinth Canal. In Mitikas, we all settled into a beautiful little hotel overlooking the sea. The welcome was warm and the view of the turquoise waters breathtaking. The more active among us took out paddleboards to explore the small coves nearby.
Boat Trip to Kalamos
The next day, we rented boats to explore the island of Kalamos , located just opposite. This small Ionian island is a hidden gem, with tranquil beaches and coves accessible only by sea. We anchored near a deserted beach and had a picnic by the water. We were even lucky enough to spot a Mediterranean monk seal!
Day 4: Relaxing Day and Birthday Evening
For our last day in Mitikas, we opted for a relaxing day. Lounging on the beach, swimming, and reading in the shade of a parasol filled this tranquil day. In the evening, we celebrated our friend's birthday with dinner by the water, lulled by the sound of the waves. The local gluten-free dishes, such as grilled fish, pickled vegetables, stuffed eggplant, and meat kebabs, delighted our taste buds. And of course, there was ouzo! The atmosphere was convivial and festive—a truly memorable moment.
Why choose Greece for a getaway with family or friends?
In conclusion, this trip to Greece for our friend's 50th birthday was an enchanting interlude, full of discoveries, shared moments, and magnificent landscapes. An ideal destination for a trip with family or friends, highly recommended!
