Pura Vida, the expression that sums up the Costa Rican way of life.
When I was still a student, I had the opportunity to spend several months in Costa Rica interning at a company that produces and exports tropical plants. This country, renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and warm culture, was the perfect setting to combine work and exploration. During my stay, I was lucky enough to experience local life firsthand, living with a family in Palmares, a charming village nestled in the mountains, not far from San José, the capital where I landed. Pura Vida is an expression you'll hear every day, and the only response you should give is Pura Vida.
Living in Palmares: An Authentic Cultural Immersion
Palmares is a picturesque little town that offered me a complete immersion in Costa Rican culture. The family who hosted me was incredibly generous, sharing not only their home but also their traditions, their cuisine, and their stories. This daily life allowed me to discover the true soul of Costa Rica, far from the tourist trails, and to appreciate every moment spent in this community. The scenery was stunning, and I regularly came across magnificent flowers (they have over 1,400 species) and colorful birds.
Meal arrangements were quite haphazard. One of the rare meals eaten as a family was Sunday lunch, to which the entire family was invited (from grandchildren to grandparents, uncles and aunts). The rest of the week, there was always a pot full of rice and plantains in the kitchen, and everyone helped themselves when they were hungry.
I also remember one evening, I had already eaten dinner and they came to get me, telling me we were going to a restaurant: well, I had something light: a Costa Rican ceviche and a tres leches cake for dessert!
I also attended a funeral: unlike in our culture, everyone was dressed in colorful clothes to convey joy, not sorrow. The funeral took place with music and many smiles.
Exploring the Arenal Volcano
During my stay, I had the opportunity to visit the Arenal Volcano. Located in Arenal National Park, this majestic volcano is surrounded by dense rainforest and boasts numerous trails offering spectacular views. I was fortunate enough to see the breathtaking landscapes and relax in the natural hot springs, which are said to have soothing properties. It was a wonderful moment of connection with nature.
The Magic of Turtle Laying Eggs
Another highlight of my trip was witnessing the turtles laying their eggs on the coast. Seeing these ancient marine creatures emerge from the ocean to deposit their eggs in the sand is a captivating and moving spectacle. This event, which occurs primarily at night, offers a lesson in resilience and the continuity of life that leaves no one unmoved. Witnessing this natural phenomenon reinforced my respect for environmental preservation, an essential aspect of Costa Rican culture. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take any photos on the day of the nesting, as we left very quickly, leaving our clothes and cameras at the office. I will cherish these memories.
Conclusion: A Transformative Experience
My internship in Costa Rica and life in Palmares were much more than just a professional experience. They allowed me to discover the beauty of a country where nature, culture, and the warm hospitality of its people blend harmoniously. Every moment spent exploring Costa Rica, whether at the foot of the Arenal volcano, on the beach watching turtles, in the mountains, or in the lush jungle of Palmares, enriched my life and broadened my horizons.
