Trip to Greece for a Friend's 50th birthday: Discovery of Athens and Escape to one of the Ionian islands (Kalamos)

A friend from Singapore now living in Athens, organized his 50th birthday in Greece, bringing together around fifty friends. It was an opportunity to visit a destination combining history, breathtaking landscapes, and fabulous local cuisine. Between the discovery of Athens and a relaxing stay with friends in Mitikas, opposite Kalamos, this trip fulfilled us. Here is a little preview of our adventure.

Athens: Immersion in Ancient History

The Acropolis and the Plaka District

It's impossible to start a visit to Athens without stopping by the Acropolis . We took the time to climb to the top to admire the Parthenon , one of the most famous monuments in the world. The history of this mythical place and the panoramic views of the city were impressive.

On the way back down, we strolled through the Plaka district , a charming place with its cobbled streets, small shops and taverns. We enjoyed naturally gluten-free Greek dishes, such as Greek salad, grilled vegetables and herb-roasted chicken.

Temple of Zeus and Mount Lycabettus

The next day, we started the day with a visit to the Temple of Zeus , another archaeological wonder of Athens. The scale of this ancient structure is fascinating. Next, we took the time to climb Mount Lycabettus , one of the highest points in Athens. After a short climb, we were rewarded with a breathtaking view of the entire city, with the Acropolis as a backdrop. This place is perfect for a contemplative break, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Saint-Georges chapel at the top added a touch of charm to this panorama.

After this climb, we explored the lively Monastiraki with its market, perfect for finding souvenirs.

After these two intense days in Athens, under 40 degrees, we were ready for a calmer break and took the road to Mitikas , a small village located opposite the island of Kalamos.

Four Days of Relaxation in Mitikas: Between Sea and Nature

After the dynamism of Athens, Mitikas offered us an ideal setting to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Ionian Islands . This charming village, located on the coast, facing the island of Kalamos , is a true haven of peace.

Installation and Stroll by the Sea

On the way, we stopped to admire the Corinth Canal. In Mitikas, we all settled into a magnificent little hotel with a view of the sea. The welcome was warm and the view was breathtaking over the turquoise waters. The more sporty ones took the paddles to explore the small surrounding coves.

Kalamos Boat Trip

The next day we rented boats to explore the island of Kalamos , located just opposite. This small Ionian island is an unspoiled gem, with quiet beaches and coves accessible only by sea. We anchored near a deserted beach and had a picnic by the water. We even had the chance to come across a Mediterranean monk seal!!

Day 4: Relaxation Day and Birthday Evening

For our last day in Mitikas, we opted for a relaxing day. Lazing on the beach, swimming and reading in the shade of a parasol punctuated this peaceful day. In the evening, we celebrated our friend's birthday with a dinner by the water, to the sound of the waves. Local gluten-free dishes, such as grilled fish, marinated vegetables, stuffed eggplant and meat skewers, delighted our taste buds. Without forgetting the Ouzo! The atmosphere was friendly and festive, a memorable moment.

Why Choose Greece for a getaway with Family or Friends?

In conclusion, this stay in Greece for our friend's 50th birthday was an enchanted interlude, full of discoveries, moments of sharing and magnificent landscapes. An ideal destination for a trip with family or friends, to be recommended without hesitation!
